It is amazing, but I would question some of these "statistics". I do believe that social media is here to stay, but much of it will be gone tomorrow (how many of us use netscape?).
I think the picture that this gives is that we are in a changing society and we need to prepare those in the new generation for those changes, but not at the expense of those technologies that still work. E.g. I still use a land line telephone for situations similar to what I experienced last December. The ice storm that caused massive power outages also caused those with digital phones to loose their service. We had telephone service when friends on the same block had to wait for 4-5 days before they could communicate with anyone. There cell phone service had also gone out.
This is great. I wonder what the implications or lack thereof are for education based upon this information. I see so many teachers, schools, and districts going the opposite direction of this i.e. banning cell phone usage, teacher refusing to use technology, etc. Aren't textbooks at this point becoming obsolete? Many of my students learn more on their own and faster than anything they get in a classroom and from a textbook.
This is great stuff Tony. I loved the marriage stat. But I questioned the email being passe stat. Rather, I did not understand it. I guess it is passe for personal communication as most of my non-face-to-face personal communique is SMS or Facebook. I guess email really is becoming more of a business communication tool now that I think about it.
On a personal note, I believe i DID gain more from my online education than many of my in class experiences.
Just one minor thing in the video to note is that it says iPod apps instead of iPhone apps. Probably just a typo.
I liked this - it gives you such a great overview of what social media is and how it's grown.
The stats don't bother me that much as it still conveys the message that social media is not going away, it's growing. Many of my co-workers still think that social media/networking is a "fad" and will eventually die down ... seems they are in for a suprise!
Interesting figures..I think there is so much of hype about social media. People writing articles on how to use twitter and linkedin. Newspaper and email will not die in future but social networking sites might die...
