There is alot of talk about motivation and some of the mechanisms of gamification but you’ve really drilled down into the design aspects of points, community options and so on as motivators Look forward to hearing more. I would not read a book on diet and exercise, but by seeing the data on how my body reacts to exercise, I am learning about diet and fitness and badges/goals keep me motivated. I am working with my team to add these motivational tools/analytics directly into our online content, like Kahn to provide short-term goals (badges) and long-term goals. This talk he gave to the Google UX team ( http://codingconduct.cc/Meaningful-Play ) last year is a great place to start and it directly references and critiques some of the sites you are looking at.Sam Burroughhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13462973807930532716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22055982.post-71095248081933105932012-11-27T00:58:26.605-08:002012-11-27T00:58:26.605-08:00Gook work..6 Ways to Motivate the People using Mot...Gook work..6 Ways to Motivate the People using Motivational QuotesAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11985672223934031967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22055982.post-49308652675381253642012-11-27T00:14:53.059-08:002012-11-27T00:14:53.059-08:00This is a very timely post for me since it coincid...This is a very timely post for me since it coincides with the features and functions we are building onto our language learning platform. As most of our students are busy adults, I a firm believer in using the Flipped Classroom approach to help them learn a new language. But a lot of the challenge indeed lies in how you motivate and help them study on their own outside the class and accomplish the purpose of receiving input. I've also taken a lot of inspiration from well designed social apps that make things like recording your voice and share it possible and making it an instantly sharable learning achievement.Jenny Zhuhttp://jennyzhu.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22055982.post-57517338344219120702012-11-26T19:17:42.790-08:002012-11-26T19:17:42.790-08:00@marlobarnett - I will do my best to keep updating...@marlobarnett - I will do my best to keep updating around this topic as I learn more.

@unknown - thanks for the pointer to Fitocracy. The community is super helpful, there are "quests" and "achievements" that inspire you to try new things (it's what got me into weightlifting, which is now one of my favorite hobbies!) and points that let you "level up" to satisfy and motivate your inner gamer. I like how you are specifically looking at how people are motivated to do the activities on these three sites, and the commonalities that run between them. I find that the rewards system is always a good motivator in changing behavior. Collecting badges, points, etc. can cause someone to change their behavior. But also look at color and sound. Las Vegas is filled with people everyday with changed behavior from playing the slot machines. The bright lights and and ringing bells keep people coming back. It's also true in the video games. Please keep me posted of your findings.Marlobarnetthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16609837037702673430noreply@blogger.com
